Huge festival marks Philippine Independence Day

Posted by Robert Cumber on Jun 11, 08 01:22 PM in

philipino.jpgUp to 40,00 revellers descended on Lampton Park to celebrate Philippine Independence Day on Sunday.

Comedian Rufa Mae Quinto joined on-and-off-screen couple Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo on stage as crowds enjoyed traditional music, dance and food throughout the day.

The event began with the Santacruzan, a huge procession celebrating Queen Helena's finding of the Holy Cross.

The Philippines declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, and there are an estimated 250,000 Filipinos living in the UK today.

Lampton Park in Lampton Road, Hounslow, is already host to the annual Barrio Festival, which takes place on July 19 this year.
