Tag and Tackle Crime event

Rugby07.jpgHounslow Police Safer Transport Team ran a week long youth diversion scheme with the English Rugby Football Union,which culminated in a finals day involving 80 youths held at Beavers Sports Lodge, Hounslow West.

The event called "Tag and Tackle Crime", organised by PCSO Dave Nicholas, involved youths from all areas of Hounslow ranging from 8 to 17 year olds.

Coaching in Tag rugby was provided by RFU staff at sites in Boston Manor Park, Thornbury Park, Feltham Airparcs and Beavers Sports Lodge before the final day of competition.

The scheme run by the Safer Transport Team was designed to engage with youths and provide education on bus crime and its effect on their local communities. A special bus equipped by Transport For London continually ran an educational video from Bustag, while youths were also spoken to regarding their use of Oyster cards on their return to school. Displays were also given by the Metropolitan Police Dog Section and London Fire Brigade.

The day included teams of youths from the four areas competing with each other to reach a final, which was won by the Boston Manor Team. Older youths from the Beavers area who were unable to take part in the younger age group event took on a the Police Team from the Safer Transport Team, this contest was highly competitive and resulted in 2 of the Beavers youths being invited for trials with Wasps Rugby Union Club.

PS Rhodes who runs the Safer Transport Team said "The event was aimed to educate kids regarding crime on public transport and give them confidence to engage with local PCSO's who look after their safety on the buses. The event has been a huge success and we will definitely look to run it again next year"

Sergeant Rhodes who presented medals and certificates to the youngsters thanked all those involved in the event especially The Hub Team, the local Barracks and Hounslow Borough Council for providing the facilities.
