Cans fruitful for Malawi

Malawi-Trees-2.jpgA total of 33 orange trees have been planted in the south African country of Malawi thanks to recyclers in Hounslow.

That's how many tonnes of metal the borough's recycled last year, according to not-for-profit organisation Alupro in the last year, who have pledged to plant one tree per tonne.

It donated the trees to charity Ripple Africa, which has set up nurseries across Africa run by garden clubs and schools.

"We are delighted that after just one year recyclers in Hounslow have been responsible for giving 33 fruit trees to the project," said Jayshree Taank, Hounslow Council's senior community recycling officer.

"I would urge everyone to make sure that they always recycle their drinks cans and foil to help build a sustainable future in Malawi."

Recyclers across the UK are expected to give 48,000 fruit trees this year, which will help improve nutrition and develop trade in Africa.
