Punjabi wedding celebration lights up street

Posted by Robert Cumber on Sep 4, 08 03:52 PM in People

punjab-wedding.jpgThis was the scene last week as a traditional Punjabi wedding party brought the streets of Hounslow to life.

Lawyer Kiran Sagar and 29-year-old accountant Sanjiv Bali tied the knot in Birmingham on Sunday, but they made sure their neighbours didn't miss out on the celebrations.

The happy couple were joined by scores of friends and family in Standard Road, Hounslow West, on Friday evening as they performed a traditional Punjab ceremony rarely seen outside rural India.

Revellers donned colourful costumes, balanced decorated vessels on their heads and beat dhol drums as they paraded down the street singing 'jaggo', a procession song to call neighbours to the wedding.

Earlier in the day, they had covered the groom's face in 'vatna', a mixture of turmeric powder and mustard oil, and draped his family home in colourful lights.

We'd like to hear from you.
