Pants on fire in Hounslow West

A homeowner in Hounslow West got a nasty shock when he tried to clean his clothes and ended up nearly setting his house alight.

Two engines from Feltham Station raced to the semi-detached property in Connaught Avenue when a washing machine went up in flames at noon on Sunday.

Watch manager Phil Watkins said: "People don't think of washing machines, tumble dryers or dish washers as being much of a fire risk but we see several fires involving them each year.

"All it takes is regular overloading, strain to the motor or failure to get rid of the fluff and they can easily go up. That's why we recommend people stay up and stay in their homes while using these machines."

The man was at home when the fire started and successfully dampened the flames with water. Officers from the blue watch were able to put the blaze out quickly but there was some smoke damage to the home.

We'd like to hear from you.
