Shirley with pupils at Hounslow HeathA much-loved lollipop lady was given a rousing send-off by youngsters at Hounslow Heath Infant & Nursery School.

Shirley Geoghegan has hung up her stick after more than 12 years spent helping children to and from the school in Martindale Road, Hounslow.

Youngsters paid tribute in a special assembly last Friday, presenting her with flowers and handmade cards. They even dressed as lollipop people and serenaded her with guitars and a trombone.

Shirley, who lives in nearby Orchard Road, and used to make circuit boards for electronics firm Dewhurst & Partners, told the Chronicle she would miss the job.

"I've loved every minute of it," said the 72-year-old gran-of-three.

"They're a great bunch of children and it was a lovely assembly."

Shirley was inspired to take up the job by husband James, 82, who spent seven years helping children cross at Grove Road Primary School, in Hounslow, after retiring from his job at the old Trico foundry in Hounslow's Great West Road.
